The CATS Cats at a Glance...

Welcome. This page is primarily for the "beginner CATS obsessee". If you're an old hand, it will all be very obvious! Although, then again, if you're like me, you're probably just randomly browsing anything Jellicle-related, so bien venue to you as well.

This is page of all the cats in the video (yes, just the video - it tends to be most obsessees' first introduction after all) along with their names, what they do or sing in the show... basically so you can identify them easier! It may seem to strange to think back that far, but I do remember that it took me a few watchings of the end of the video to get unconfused about certain characters... I mean, on the first viewing I even thought Demeter and Jemima might be the same cat!

This is NOT character info as such, just a VERY basic "Who's Who?"

More info/controversies/misc below....

...and if I've done anything insanely stupid like miss someone out, email me (jesta.ariadne AT gmailDOT com) right now and tell me!!!!

Electra. Kitten. Seen with other kittens, especially Etcetera.

Etcetera. Kitten. Rather noticably obsessed with Tugger. Commonly seen with other kittens, esp. Electra.

Jemima. Kitten. Solos in Memory (and The Moments of Happiness.) Often seen with other queen kittens.

Victoria. Kitten. Does amazing dance after The Naming, and is the first to touch Grizabella.

Munkustrap. "Narrator". Sings lots - inc. Old Gumbie Cat, Old Deuteronomy, Pekes and the Pollicles. Fights Macavity.

Cassandra. Just a few solo lines in Jellicle Songs and Invitation. Often alone and posing :)

Tantomile and Coricopat (in that order) Always together and in sync.

Alonzo. Just a few solo lines in Jellicle Songs & Invitation. Fights with Macavity.

Asparagus. One of the "older" cats. (see below for situation with Gus & Asparagus...)

Bombalurina. Solos in The Old Gumbie Cat, Rum Tum Tugger and Macavity. Flirts with... a lot of cats...

Demeter. The one who always shouts "MACAVITY!" Solos in Jennyanydots (Old Gumbie Cat) and Macavity.

Jellylorum. Solos in Jennyanydots, (big) solo in Gus.

Tumblebrutus. Tom kitten. Very acrobatic. (Or is he Bill Bailey? See below.)

Pouncival. Tom kitten. Very acrobatic. (The Carbucketty story? See below)

Plato. Dances with Victoria in Jellicle Ball. Actor plays Macavity (see below)

Exotica. No solos, very few times when she's actually even seen... (see below)

  ` :

Macavity (not that you missed him...) Erm, doesn't sing anything - he says "Muahahahaha!!!!!", catnaps Old Deuteronomy, attempts to catnap Demeter.

Mister Mistoffelees. Sings in Invitation, and a line in Rum Tum Tugger. Does a lot of magic and dancing in his own song.

The Rum Tum Tugger. Sings in Old Deuteronomy, The Rum Tum Tugger, Mister Mistoffelees. Oh, and he also plays bag pipes in the Pekes and the Pollicles! Very popular among the young queens, and certain of the toms :)

Gus. The Theatre Cat. Sings... you guessed it.

Grizabella. Sings Grizabella and Memory...

Old Deuteronomy (a.k.a. The Walking Rug!) Sings some of Old Deuteronomy, The Moments of Happiness and the Ad-dressing of Cats.

Mungojerrie. In Mungojerrie & Rumpelteazer... Usually with Rumpelteazer.

Rumpelteazer. In Mungojerrie & Rumpelteazer! Usually with Mungojerrie. She also sneezes in Skimbleshanks!

The Great Rumpus Cat! (left) and Admetus (right), May or not be the same cat, but the same actor!! ...I'm just making them share a box so everyone fits on the table, I'm sorry! Rumpus is fairly noticable-- Admetus quite the opposite. More elusive even than Exotica! Go here for help if you can't find him...

Jennyanydots. Sings & dances in her own song, also (in her more "normal" costume) in Bustopher Jones - he gives her the rose at the end.

Bustopher Jones (yes, that's actually a London picture! Buaha. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll cope.) Appears and sings in.... Bustopher Jones!

Skimbleshanks - Sings in his own song, for which he puts on a little more costume than the rest of the show.

General

All cats except Exotica and the Great Rumpus Cat sing a solo line or part of a line in Jellicle Songs (I guess you could say Macavity doesn't either, but whoever his "alter ego" is does) Tant & Cori sing together and the queen kittens sometimes sing in a group.

A lot of cats get closeups in "The Naming of Cats"... but strangely enough, not when their name is being mentioned! *shakes head* Silly video producers...

All female kittens like the Rum Tum Tugger!! Most females, period, in fact. You probably noticed. And some males (look closer...)

Most cats dress up variously in Jennyanydots and Pekes and the Pollicles... you probably noticed that too :)

Also...

Quaxo...Mistoffelees...?...Mistoffelees...Quaxo...?

This one's not TOO confusing... First of all, no you didn't miss something - the name "Quaxo" does not appear on the vid. But he sure seems to hang around the fandom a lot! In London, that small black & white & cute tuxedo kitty is called Quaxo except when he's sparkly and doing magic tricks under the name Mr Mistoffelees. Are they really two different cats? Is Mistoffelees his second or third name?? That's for you to decide...

The Special Case of Sillabub

Jemima is on the video and in London, but when relocated to Broadway & various other places (France, for example, I think) had her name changed to Sillabub, another of TS Eliot's made up cat names. Her character is basically the same, but apparently more hyper/mischievous at times!

Where's Plato? Who's Plato?

Although it's generally accepted that it is Plato who dances with Victoria on the vid and who looks like the piccy above, you may have noticed he's not mentioned at all on the credits. He's also apparently the same actor as Macavity (as Admetus' actor also plays Macavity in London.) However, since he looks nothing like the London Admetus and something like the B'way Plato... that's who we think he is!

Invisible Kitty

Exotica - who is she? Why is she here? We don't know!!! Well, not really: actually, it's probably simply because the actress - Femi Taylor - was the original London Tantomile and they wanted her in vid as something! She does only appear in the video, and gets absolutely no solos, and very few close ups. Still, I'm glad she's there; she looks cool and apart from anything else adds another dimension to fanfiction :)

What's With Asparagus?

We are told that Gus the Theatre Cat's name "is really Asparagus"... and yet, a totally different cat in video bears that name. Logically, this is because John Mills, at however old he was, was unsurprisingly not exactly up to all the dancing!! Although not credited, you could say that their is an "Asparagus" in London too - it's just Gus out of costume.

The Many Incarnations of Jenny!

Cats like Jennyanydots and Skimbleshanks don't wear the costume(s) they wear in their songs throughout. ...In Jellicle Songs, you also get to see Tugger, Grizabella and Old Deuteronomy in sort of half costume. Which is very amusing :D

The Missing Ones

The vid seems mostly based on London, but here are a few cats who didn't make it in...

Carbucketty... as he is called in London, is basically Pouncival on the video. They look similar though not identical. I think in Broadway they have (had...) both? (Confirmation? Sorry, I know next to nothing about the B'way production...) Carbucketty is also very CUTE!!!

Bill Bailey... similar deal. He's in London and the one that looks like him on the vid is called Tumblebrutus. ("Tumblebrutus" is mentioned in Growltiger's Last Stand...)

Victor... another cute kitten, just doesn't appear for some reason.

George... like Victor, although he wasn't in London for a while. I think I'm right in saying he was only ever played by one person there and the part went when he did. Some people think that "Admetus" in the video actually looks more like him.

Growltiger & Griddlebone... The pirate and the drama queen - Gus and Jellylorum dressed up!... Their whole number was cut from the vid, so surprisingly enough, they're not here!.

Also, in London there were several unnamed swings who take whatever part is needed and otherwise add to chorus volume etc.
